Job Description

The Simultaneous Translator is responsible for delivering high quality live translation for Sky News Arabia, from and to the Arabic language. As well as impeccable Arabic, he/she must have a thorough knowledge of political, economic and journalistic issues and be able to demonstrate professionalism in a demanding, high stress and fast-paced environment.

The qualified candidate must be able to interpret simultaneously and professionally different speeches, news conferences, etc from and into English, French and Arabic, with his/her voice being broadcast live. In addition, he/she should ensure that linguistic and journalistic standards are consistently met. The simultaneous interpreter works closely with reporters, producers and correspondents and provides feedback to enhance the overall quality and accuracy of news coverage. Simultaneous interpreters and translators are responsible for facilitating cross-cultural communication through the process of converting one language into a different language. Along with simple translation they also relay ideas and concepts between different languages.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide simultaneous interpretation with precision and at great speed for: Studio Guests, Live Coverage, Press Conferences, Speeches, Meetings, Telephone calls, etc.
• Work under the direction of either the output production team or newsdesk, provide simultaneous translation between English, French and Arabic.
• Provide translation help and guidance to correspondents and anchors on their delivery, if required.
• Required to work within a shift pattern across the whole week, including nights, to service the needs of a 24 hour news channel.

Key Skills, Experience and Education

• Fluency in English, French and Classical Arabic.
• Excellent simultaneous translation skills and solid news judgment.
• Ability to work under intense deadline pressure.
• Good broadcast voice
• Experience in television news, including television news production, with a strong journalistic background
• Extensive knowledge of the geo-political, socio-economical and cultural issues of the Middle East; extensive knowledge of the relationship of the Middle East with the international community.
• Self-disciplined; skilled at time-management.
• Minimum of 3 years experience as simultaneous translator (conference interpreter).
• BA in English/French, journalism or other related major.
